Statement of Candidacy for
IFLA Governing Board Candidate 2009-2011
Jesus Lau, Ph.D.
(Mexico)
IFLA has been a significant part of my life for the past twenty years. I attended my first congress in Brighton, UK, in 1987 when I was a library PhD candidate at Sheffield University - and I was hooked! Doors kept opening: At the same 1987 congress, I was invited to go on a German library tour organized for a group of Latin Americans. Later, at the Paris Conference in 1989, I delivered a paper and met the Coordinator of Professional Activities, and offered to work for him as a conference interpreter in exchange for flight and hotel expenses. I continued to attend IFLA in this manner until 1993, when I secured a professional position at the Universidad de Ciudad Juarez Library. I am a librarian by heart via training at Denver University, after receiving my Bachelor´s Degree in law from Sinaloa University (Mexico).
I can contribute to IFLA’s current goals, having served in many leadership roles at the section and division level. My recent contributions have focused on Information Literacy, as chair, secretary, and information officer. The Information Literacy Section now has guidelines, an international resources directory, an ongoing worldwide state-of-the art report, a logo selected from an international contest, and a recently published book. Membership on the current Governing Board has given me the broad perspective necessary to better carry this task forward for a second term. I will strongly support the advocacy goals endorsed by our current and incoming presidents, and work to strengthen communication channels among the membership.
I am passionate about libraries and their potential. Help me to continue representing your concerns as members, especially those from emerging economies, and to increase IFLA´S global marketplace of ideas and enthusiasm. Thank your for your support.
